first i should say thanks to my mother, because she was the one who led me into the world of reading and encouraged me to keep reading during all this years.
my mother was a teacher who taught Chinese in middle school, and she likes reading very much. when i was like 3 years old, she taught me some Chinese poems. children usually have very good memory, so i was able to remeber those sentences although i understood nothing about the poem. thereafter, my mother asked me to resite those poems at different circumerstanses. and i got praise from others, which makes me very proud of my little skills. and the next time when my mother taught me a new poem, i was very interested in learning.
Then, i grew up , went to school, and could read simple contents by myself. i found a lot of reading in class are familar to me beacuse i had learned them at home already. as a result, i always got good marks, which encourages me to read more and more in advance.
Gradually, i develp my reading literacy and find reading is very interesting and useful. it helps me to know other's lives, to get different information and to have more topics to share with my friends.

Gooooood you have good experience with your reading. Me aslo I really liked reading books with my mother as a little child!
even though we speak the language but we have different ways to learn it......haha...so much fun for me, cuz before, i assme u have the same way to learn chinese but after i had a chance to talk to u, i just realized ......we have different ways to learn the same language. but anyway, i agree with u, family is the main factor that influence people's literacy.
maggie, we have the same literacy,but your literacy's history is not the same as mine.
u are so lucky to get this literacy. we need it at the rest of our lives to be our information. I also love reading, regardingless to acedemic. Hahaha... I love novel.

For me, the way of learning chinese is also remembering the fucking ugly poems without understand at the beginning. As I could remember about 100 poems, it was the year when I went to elementary school. In elemrntary, I tried to read newspaper in grade two , tried to understand simple novel in grade three , and tried to write something in grade four.
However , as study in the middle school, I never learnt the bullshit chinese course anymore, because of family influence. Every time , if I could not get the high mark of the science ,such as Physics,Chemistry,and Biology, I would be blamed by my father.
On the other hand, if I got a very low mark from chinese course, my father just smiled and said :" oh, take a look about my lovely son' mark , he begin to look down our ancestors of Han,haha."
And my father always said that, during the last six hundred years, due to the chinese intelligentsia only attention to learn and reach the chinese literature, the national power became more and more weak , at the end ,like a shit.
The literature can not renew the China , the power only coming from science .
Maggie, we have the same experiance with reading literacy. My grandmother is the teascher in elementary school in Ukrain and she is the one who thought me how to read and write.
